‘Sun House,’ the third novel by David James Duncan, author of ‘The River Why’ and ‘The Brothers K,’ is a spiritual epic about seekers who end up living on a large commune in western Montana

A bestselling Montana author’s magnum opus nearly broke him. Then it saved his soul

In this conversation, author David James Duncan speaks with Emergence Magazine podcast host Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee about his new epic novel, Sun House, which follows an eclectic collection of characters as they each seek Truth and meaning, ultimately forming an unintentional community in rural Montana. Talking about the ways a heart can be transformed by deep experiences of mystical transcendence, David shares the impetus behind the novel to impart an experiential model of contemplative inner life that could help us navigate our ecological unraveling.

Duncan was kind enough to invite Jason and Copi to his home outside Missoula this spring where they sat in his living room amidst the curios of a literary life, stacks of books, and complete and not-so-complete manuscripts waiting to see the light of day. We talked about flyfishing, of course. But we also talked about spiritual integrity, writing, coming of age and the work still in store for him.
